24-year-old Zachary Katz, a suspected drunk driver, was taken into custody Saturday morning for causing an accident which took the life of an individual.
The accident happened on Highway 101 in South San Francisco at about 3:50 a.m. as Katz was driving the wrong way. One person died and 2 others sustained injuries. Katz also suffered serious injuries due to which he was sent to a hospital after being arrested.
Katz was behind the wheel of an Infiniti sedan going north onto southbound Highway 101 near Sierra Point Parkway when he struck an SUV taxicab in which a driver and 2 passengers were travelling. The force of the collision sent the taxi across the lanes of the roadway and a Mazda hit it.
The passengers were not wearing seatbelts due to which one of them was thrown out of the vehicle and died at the accident spot. The second passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The taxi driver, 31-year-old Azmach Ejersa, sustained minor injuries.
The person behind the wheel of the Mazda was unharmed.
Katz will be sent to jail after completion of his treatment at the hospital.
The accident site was closed for almost 3 hours to clear the debris and to investigate the case.
